CLONA CURLY was the star of the show at Sunday's pre-meeting trials Derby trials session at Towcester with Diane Henry's Northern Puppy Derby champion clocking hand-timed 28.94sec over 500m.

Tom Heilbron's Links Maverick went well in posting 29.05sec although kennelmate Havana Meanie was beaten a distance having checked at the second bend.

A first look for Michael O'Donovan's Shelbourne 600 champion Ryhope Beach resulted in a 29.18sec solo with his kennelmate Pennys Lynx posting 29.47sec.

Other trials of note were the 29.21sec recorded by Heilbron's Greenwell Coe and 29.35sec by Patrick Janssens' 2023 Derby runner-up Romeo Command.

However, it was a case of what might have been for Dave Lee's El Tornillo who was well clear with metres to go in his trial when the hare had to be stopped due to Puckane Story having turned round having been distracted and checked at the second bend.

Towcester subsequently announced that Derby trials planned for Tuesday morning will now take place on Thursday with the evening race meeting on Tuesday also pushed back 48 hours.

This is to allow work to be done replacing large sections of the hare rail which have been causing issues in addition to further work on the automatic start.
