THE official build-up to the £175,000 Star Sports/TRC English Derby got off to an explosive start when Greyhound of the Year Droopys Clue lowered the 500m track record in the top division of the first batch of trial stakes.

Seamus Cahill's star had suffered a shock semi-final elimination from Oxford's Hunt Cup on his previous start but was razor sharp dropped back to four bends, taking early command and running right away from his rivals.

At the line, he was almost eight lengths to the good of last year's Derby third Cochise in clocking 28.58sec, six spots inside the previous best of 2023 Derby runner-up Romeo Command set on New Year's Eve.

There was also an early warning of the likely strength of the Irish challenge when Faypoint Susie, who beat subsequent champion Gaytime Nemo in the first round last year when trained by John Mullins, helped Graham Holland put the icing on the cake of his Juvenile success with Faypoint Harvey by scoring in 29.14sec.
