GBGB looking for public support as it petitions for tax equality

THE GBGB is asking for support as it petitions the government for the sport to be granted the sae Betting Duty tax break as horseracing was given in last year's Budget.

In the 2025 Budget, the Labour Government raised the remote rate of General Betting Duty from 15 to 25 per cent from April 2027.

It took the positive step of excluding UK horse racing from the rise, recognising taxing bets on domestic racing more heavily would undermine the funding model of a sport which supports jobs and communities and is regulated in the public interest.

The GBGB wrote: "We are now asking for this principle to be extended to greyhound racing - a modest change that would support the local communities and small businesses that rely on the sport for their survival. 

"Tax policy should not unintentionally make it harder for one historic British sport to survive while another is protected. That is why we are asking the Government to deliver tax parity for greyhound racing.

"Greyhound racing is a vital part of communities across Britain, supporting thousands of jobs and providing an affordable and enjoyable sporting experience for millions of people each year.

"However, the industry faces significant challenges, and we are calling on the Government to deliver fair tax treatment for greyhound racing."

An open letter has been launched asking for support for tax parity and the protection of the jobs, businesses and communities that rely on greyhound racing.

The GBGB added: "We are aiming to show decision-makers just how many people value and depend on greyhound racing.
