GREYHOUND racing is mourning the death of Classic winning trainer Richard Yeates who passed away unexpectedly on Saturday at the age of 80.

A statement on the kennel's Facebook page read: “It is with great sadness that we need to inform you of the shock news of the passing of Richard.

"The family request for privacy at this very sad time and we will post any updates when further information becomes available.

"All our thoughts are with Diane, Darren, Wayne and their families at this tragic time.”

Yeates first took out a training licence in 1978 and enjoyed his biggest success in 2010 when Freedom Emma won the Oaks at Wimbledon.

He steered Faughan Rebel to the 2022 Derby semi-finals at Towcester and claimed the Sandy Lane Maiden Derby at home track Oxford the following year courtesy of Unanimous Boy.

Yeates' last runner on Friday evening was a winner as Ballintemple Dan landed a D1 sprint at Oxford.
