Suffolk Downs stages first trials session with two more planned
Michelle Brown, and Glengar Daisy after a 2023 win there, sent a trial team to Suffolk Downs

SUFFOLK DOWNS took the initial step towards a resumption of racing on Thursday with a re-introductory trials session - the first time greyhounds had gone round the track since a devastating fire there in July 2024.

The low-key session comprised entirely Michelle Brown-trained greyhounds with the handler set to return as a key part of the strength at the Mildenhall venue and, while there were inevitable teething problems which led to a couple of void workouts, overall it was a positive experience.

Fastest time of the session, with all trials over the standard 388m trip, was the 23.89sec (normal) from Westfield Vicky, who ran six times over the course and distance earlier in her career for Jason Smith when her best clocking was 24.34sec.

There are more substantial trials sessions planned for next week with an expectation of a first race meeting during November.

Promoter Kevin Boothby said: "I’m absolutely delighted to see greyhounds once again running around Suffolk Downs.

"With the track now relicensed by GBGB we are ramping up our preparations for a return to racing and I’m extremely grateful to Michelle Brown in putting the first few of hers around the track today.

"We will be staging two trial sessions on Wednesday and Thursday next week and look forward to confirming our planned race days for November."
