Milo eyes another ‘home’ win in Welsh Derby after Valley success

ANGLESEY MILO proved the market emphatically right with a tremendous performance to land the £3,000 final of the SIS British Bred Standard over 460m at Valley.

Initially put in as second favourite at 5/4 behind fastest heat winner Romeo Victor, the Nathan Hunt-trained winner was supported all the way into 4/6 and his backers never really had cause for concern.

Trapping far better than in the heats when he had come from off the pace to win, Anglesey Milo was soon at the head of affairs and, try as he might, always prominent Romeo Victor was unable to bridge the gap.

At the line, Anglesey Milo was just over a length to the good of his chief rival in posting 28.13sec, with King Floyd another five lengths back in third.

"It was nice to win it with a dog born in Wales!" winning trainer Hunt told the Racing Post, "bred and reared by [owner] Mike Jones.

"It [took] a couple of runs for Milo to get the hang of the track but he trapped much better and he’s a tough dog to pass when he’s on the bunny.

"He’s competed against the best recently but thought the track and trip would suit.

"We took a chance bypassing the Produce Stakes so we’re very pleased it paid off.

"He’ll head back to Valley for the [Star Sports] Welsh Derby, where I hope to take a few.

"I have to thank the racing office and kennel staff for being very accommodating. It’s a very well run track and the surface was superb today."
