Plunge powers to Derby victory to thwart Irish challenge

DROOPYS PLUNGE saw off the massed Irish ranks to claim a thrilling victory for the 'home' side in the £175,000 final of the Star Sports/TRC English Derby over 500m at Towcester.
The sole UK-based runner, he was sent off 10/1 having been double that price earlier in the week and credited trainer Patrick Janssens with a second victory in the famous competition four years after Thorn Falcon's success.
A fast start was key as, although he was unable to hold his prominent pitch, he remained within striking distance in a race where most connections will have got excited at some point.
Bombay Pat was the surprise leader round the first bend with kennelmate and favourite Bockos Diamond in pursuit.
The market leader came to challenge at the third bend but lost crucial momentum in squeezing past on Bombay Pat’s inside and, although in front turning for home, he was unable to fend off Droopys Plunge, who powered past late on for a length and a half victory in 28.76sec (normal).
De Lahdedah, the 2024 winner, found himself well adrift after trouble rounding the first couple of bends but flew home to take third a short-head back.
It was an extraordinary night for Janssens who landed a six-timer including supporting finals with Romeo Ability, Romeo Steel and Romeo Tomcat.
